It's been raining a lot lately. And the wind can be too much sometimes. Most of the time I'm stuck here on the 21st floor of the condominium where I live. Been spending too much time sitting in front of the tv. And on local television you see nothing more than the story, the wake and the funeral of former President Corazon "Cory" Cojuangco Aquino. She's the first woman president of the Philippines and the only one who sat on the presidency whose name has not been tainted by corruption. Here are a few of my personal opinions about this woman and those I've heard from other people:
Truth, freedom and justice...That's what she stood for. Her unwaivering faith in God has kept her strong through all the hardships she had to face in life.Including the illness that took her life away.
For me,I was too young to understand what I saw on tv during the time of the People Power Revolution. But looking at it now from an adult's point of view, it was a monumental time not only for the Filipinos but for the whole world that saw that we can achieve change and and new beginning peacefully. And that if the people of a nation will work as one, change is possible. And it makes us realize that change should start withing each and everyone of us.
This happened a long time ago and people thought a lot of us have already forgotten but during the funeral of Cory we all realized that it was just on the sides merely "sleeping" and the people on the streets showed that "we still remember'.
I just hope that people will continue to fight for what is rightfully ours. That is freedom. That is democracy. That is that truth and integrity can make us move forward as a nation. That fighting for all of these and not letting fear or silence take over us shall bring us to a Philippines most Filipinos are hoping for.
Some of the songs sang at the church fit the lives and deaths of Cory and Ninoy and what they fought for. These were 'the Impossible Dream","Magkaisa", and "Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo"..
The last two songs continue to touch the Filipino hearts and awakens the hearts of Filipnos who are hoping for a better country.
What I hope for is that Filipinos will not bury what Cory and those who joined in their cause along with her.So many sacrifices had been made. And if one person can do this for a country I think each one of us,if we make an effort can make a change..
Now the streets are back to normal.I just hope our feelings during the past few days will continue. The belief that we can make it through may live within us.
